Young generations of students have grown with the Internet and the continuous introduction of different kinds of electronic equipment. Now, it is normal for students to use all the technology available to finish a job. Students at colleges or universities represent a big challenge for teachers that have their teaching style well defined without the advances of technology. In these days it is normal to be at class using a laptop for taking notes, but in a classroom with more than twenty students it is hard for the teacher to know if every student is taking notes, chatting with a friend, playing games, or sending text-messages at the same time that they heard the class. Technology has given to people an easy access to information, and the ability to be multitasking. Now, a student can be answering his cellular phone, checking his e-mail, reading news, and playing games at the same time. This easy access to information and the belief that we can do different activities at the same time are not always the best outcome. In the reading Professors adjust their methods to reach technology-savvy generation is clear the effort of the teacher Beth Simon to keep the attention of her 140 computer science students which assisted to classes in their majority using a laptop. Some of her techniques are to make active her class asking a lot of questions to the students and using her own software to test the students through their laptops. CSUSM is an example of these generations, I have five classes and three of them are available at Web CT, through this program it is very easy to see my grades, my homework, and any message from the teacher. It is usual to see students at class with laptops, and all kind of electronic devices that I do not even know what are they. The use of technology devices also has a questionable impact on students; are these devices distracting students of the main fundamental at school or are they helping them to rich their goals. The answer depends of the appropriate use of the technology.
How do teachers can deal with new generations of students and their high demands?
The never-ending job of a teacher is to learn every day something new. There is no doubt about being update with the advances of technology and to recognize which tools are more useful for every task.
What would be some of your techniques to success in a class full of technology?
In the same way as Mrs. Simon did, I would keep asking questions to the whole.class and use technology to work at class. The most important issue is to keep the class alert and in the same channel of information.
